Chihuahua clothes
Chihuahua clothes are not indulgence: the world’s smallest breed loses heat faster than any other, because a tiny body has a large skin area relative to its weight. Finnish autumn and winter are demanding for a chihuahua, and the right overall makes walks enjoyable again. Janutex’s smallest sizes are made for toy breeds and sewn in Finland.
Why does a chihuahua need clothes?
A chihuahua weighs 1.5–3 kg and has no mass in which to store heat. A smooth-coated one has almost no undercoat, and even a long-coated chihuahua has a thin coat. In cold weather a chihuahua starts to shiver, lift its paws and ask to be picked up — all signs the body is cooling. Wet is worst: a soaked dog loses heat many times faster.
A warm coat or a waterproof overall lengthens walks, reduces shivering and makes November bearable.
What fits a chihuahua?
- Light material: a heavy garment restricts a tiny dog — Janutex materials are light and stretchy.
- Precise sizing: in sizes 20–30 a couple of centimetres is a whole size.
- Easy to put on: a small dog cools while being dressed — a back zip is faster.
- High collar: shields a thin neck from wind.

Choosing a size for a chihuahua
A typical chihuahua takes 20–30. Measure the back from the withers to the base of the tail and see the measuring guide — on a small dog fit decides both warmth and comfort.
Frequently asked questions
At what temperature does a chihuahua need clothes?
Most chihuahuas benefit from a garment from around +10 °C, and in freezing weather a warm overall is essential. Their small size means a large skin area relative to body weight, so heat escapes far faster than from a big dog.
Why does my chihuahua shiver?
Shivering is usually a sign of cold — the body is trying to generate heat through muscle activity. If your dog shivers on a walk it needs a warmer garment or another layer. Shivering can also be excitement or stress, but in cool weather cold is the likeliest cause.
Which size does a chihuahua need?
A typical chihuahua takes 20–30 depending on back length. Measure the back from the withers to the base of the tail and the chest at its widest, then compare with the size chart — in small sizes two centimetres is a whole size.
Do smooth- and long-coated chihuahuas need the same clothes?
Yes, though a smooth-coated one needs a warm layer earlier in autumn and for longer in spring. On a long-coated chihuahua a mud overall additionally keeps the coat free of mats and dirt.
