How to measure your dog correctly

Measuring is easy to do at home with a tape measure. Follow the steps below:

1. Back length

Back length is measured from the withers (the top of the shoulder blades, where the neck meets the back) to the base of the tail.
💡 Tip: keep your dog standing straight while you measure.

2. Chest girth

Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This tells you how much room the garment needs around your dog’s chest.
📏 Important: measure the exact chest girth, but remember to allow a little room to move.

3. Neck girth

Measure around the widest part of the neck – usually just in front of the shoulder blades. This makes sure the collar sits snugly without being tight.

4. Front leg length

Measure from the bottom of the chest along the inside of the leg to the wrist. A correctly sized front leg reaches your dog’s forearm, protecting it without restricting movement.

5. Withers height

Withers height is measured from the ground to the shoulder blades (where the neck meets the back), with the dog standing squarely. This confirms the garment’s fit in height.

If your dog is between two sizes

This is by far the most common question. The general rule: take the larger size. A garment that is too small restricts the stride and chafes at the armpits, and nothing can be done about it. A slightly roomy garment still works — ribbing and hook-and-loop adjustments take up the slack.

The mud overall is the exception: if it is clearly too big, fabric bunches at the cuffs and the dog treads on it. If the measurement lands exactly between two sizes and your dog is slim, the smaller size may be better in this one product.

The measurement is not the whole story

Back length gives you the size. It does not describe the shape. Two 40 cm dogs can be built completely differently: a deep-chested sighthound, a stocky pug and a long-backed dachshund all need a different cut at the same size. The four most common measuring mistakes

The dog is sitting. A sitting dog’s back is several centimetres shorter. Measure standing, with the weight evenly on all four legs.
Measuring to the tip of the tail. The correct end point is the base of the tail, not the tail itself.
Pulling the tape tight. Lay the tape along the coat; do not press it against the ribs.
Measuring over a winter coat. On a thick-coated dog, measure over the coat as normal — but remember the same garment will be roomier once the summer coat is in.

A puppy will outgrow the measurement

Buying a puppy an oversized garment to last the whole winter is a false economy. Too big means chafing and snagging, and the puppy never learns to wear it happily. Buy the size that fits now and the next size when you need it — or book a fitting and we will work out the growing room together.
